Located in Historic Downtown Harrisonburg, Larkin Art Studios is dedicated to promoting and supporting the arts in our community! Established in 2006 by Valerie L. Smith, Larkin offers art classes for all ages and experience levels. Each month, we also host new art exhibits by local artists. Please stop in to see us!

Open Studio Figure Drawing
Each night we will have a model for you to draw, paint or sculpt. This is an independent work session, please bring your own materials. Drawing boards are available.

Individually scheduled private/semi-private wheel-throwing lessons, beginner-intermediate. This is a unique opportunity to take advantage of the Larkin Arts facility to receive one-on-one ceramic instruction.

Larkin Art Studios offers a wide array of children's classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography and more. Workshops run monthly, with the exception of our Summer Session.
Larkin Art Studios is proud to welcome ceramic artist Nathan Horst to our classroom. Nathan will be conducting ceramic workshops for students of all ages. Please see the schedule below for times and course descriptions.
December
KNOW YOUR CLAY! (ages 6-12)
$50
Instructor: Nathan Horst
In this experimentation and process-oriented class, students will explore clay – a material that is abundant on our earth. We will collect samples of clay from the Harrisonburg area, apply different testing methods and make artwork from these local materials. Students will learn about the Japanese Bizen artist potters who heavily experimented with mixtures of local clay.
  • Session 1: Mondays Dec. 1, 8, 15; 12:30-2:30
  • Session 2: Tuesdays Dec. 2, 9, 16; 5:30-7:00
**This workshop, and the "Shaping Clay" workshop will be foundation courses for a comprehensive ceramic program that will run through the summer. Students who love clay and want to build on their knowledge should take this prerequisite courses in order to move on to the Beginner-Advanced classes.
SHAPING CLAY (ages 6-12)
$50
Instructor: Nathan Horst
In two separately offered three-day workshops, students learn about this amazingly responsive material and how it behaves differently throughout its drying cycle. This class will introduce throwing, pulling, building, carving, trimming, and burnishing. Students will learn about the behavior of clay when it is slip, throwing consistency, leather hard, and bone dry.
  • Session 1: Wednesday-Friday, Dec. 10-12; 4:00-5:30
  • Session 2: Wednesday-Friday, Dec. 10-12; 5:30-7:00

EXPLORING EARTH ARCHITECTURE (ages 6-12)

Instructor: Nathan Horst
Using local clay, students will gain an understanding of arches, domes, vaults and various methods of building with clay. Exploration of architectural forms through model building will lead to an installation of earth architecture at the Larkin Studios Gallery.

Each month, Larkin Art Studios features work by a local artist or two. Every "First Friday", we join with the Arts Council of the Valley and other downtown businesses to hold opening receptions where you can meet the artists, listen to live music and munch on refreshments.
