2017 ARTIST RESIDENCY - CHRISTOPHER SLAYMAKER
NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2017 // EXHIBIT JANUARY 2018
Larkin Arts is delighted to present our first Artist Residency. Together with sponsors Andy Harbick and the mobile bidding genius BidWrangler*, we are bringing a phenomenal L.A. based artist back to his roots for a residency experience. Artist Christopher Slaymaker will work in Studio 5 during November and December of this year, open to the public, able to show you his process and allowing you to see art in action. While he is here, Slaymaker will create work for an exhibit at Larkin Arts the following month, opening January 5, 2018. He will also provide a number of hands-on workshops and classes open to the public. Stay tuned on our School page for more details. Or reserve an early space as a perk when donating to his residency fund HERE.
Make sure to stop in to meet Christopher and see his phenomenal work in person during his stay. See art in action!
Christopher Slaymaker is a potent contemporary painter. His work contains strong gestural forms combined with abstract dream-space, rendered with rich dynamic brushwork. Slaymaker’s approach to his subjects is gentle and focused. The figures that star in Slaymaker’s paintings exhibit a blooming self-awareness and a deep devotional delight. Friends, lovers, beasts, and the artist himself all play a role in the story of spiritual unfolding in his paintings.
Chris was born in Philadelphia, PA, and raised in Harrisonburg Virginia from age 5 where he attended Waterman Elementary, and eventually graduated from Spotswood High school in the Rockingham County school system. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University majoring in illustration before moving to Olympia Washington in 2006 where he completed his bachelor's degree at The Evergreen State College. Chris moved to Southern California in 2011 to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Laguna College of Art and Design, he graduated in 2013 and now lives and works as an artist in Los Angeles California.
